Training Your Dog

The dog has long been known as “man’s best friend”. Dog training professionals have been passing on more and more knowledge about how to make your pet live up to this title. Here are some tips that you should bear in mind while training your dog.

Digging Behavior

Dogs are considered to be social beings. When the animal is lonely it can dig.Another thing that can trigger digging is nutrient deficiency. Sometimes dogs eat the dirt that they dig in order to supplement their diet. This is known as pica. Plan to spend more time with your pet and give him a good health check to keep his digging to a minimum.

Potty Training

To be successful at potty training your dog, use a reward-based method. If you give it a treat when it goes potty where it is supposed to, it will make it much easier for the puppy to remember.

Repetition, Correction and Timing

Going over commands repeatedly will give your pet time to grasp it. Remember to be consistent. To know if a dog has mastered a certain command, the dog should be able to do it three times on his own with no coaching. Make known to the animal how the command should be. Be crystal clear as to what you want your pet to do. If you command the dog and do not correct him if he did it in the wrong way, it would not be advisable. Timing means that the age of the dog must be considered when you decide to train him. It is best to train your pet while it is still a puppy.

Be Stubborn

Make sure that you establish rapport with your dog. The dog should see you as the alpha or the authoritative figure and the dog should be seen as the submissive being. If you show fear when the dog snaps back, you can damage that already built up rapport. Always make sure the dog completes the exercise.

Be A Good Actor

Provide a good outlet for your puppy’s urges to chew. You may also practice yelping loudly if your puppy begins chewing on you. After the yelping is over, fold your arms and ignore him for ten minutes. That response happens when one puppy becomes too rough when playing with other puppies. However, depending on your puppy’s personality, he may bite all the more. Therefore a much more aggressive approach should be used.
