Keeping your Pup Healthy

It is sometimes an overwhelming responsibility to take on the care of a new pet. It is vital that you take your respon sibility seriously to care for your dog’s health. First, remember that the veterinarian is your friend. You must ascertain when to call your vet. Don’t adopt a “wait and see” attitude. This could be detrimental to your dog’s well being. There are several cases when a veterinarian should be consulted:

a) If your pet is ever in an accident, always make sure to call the vet. If your vet is unavailable, look for an emergency vet clinic.

b) Always call your vet if you think your animal has eaten something that may be considered poisonous or inedible.

c) When your pet seems to be in obvious distress, then call your vet right away.

d) A sudden gain or loss of weight should be a sign that you should consult your veterinarian.

e) If your dog is coughing, having a seizure, or vomiting, then be sure to call the vet right away.

Better safe than Sorry

Of course, going to the vet should be only used as a last resort. It is your responsibility first and foremost to prevent your pet from being hurt or having it get sick. Remember that a good diet and exercise helps your pet to have a long life. It can also help prevent sickness as well as strengthen your dog. Be sure you watch what your pet eats. Make sure your dog’s cage is cleaned on a regular basis, and that it always has a clean water supply.

When walking your dog, keep it on a leash at all times. Certainly running in front of a car can spell disaster for your dog.

Bathe your dog regularly. Flease and ticks often give your dog much discomfort and they can also be disease carriers.

Thus, be sure you keep your dog in optimal shape. It goes beyond the above point mentioned. Just be sure to remember it is better to be safe than sorry. When in doubt, consult a professional.
