A Dog’s Diet

A dog’s diet is an important element of its survival. The objective of a proper diet is to obtain a proper balance of carbohydrates, proteins and fats that will promote an optimal body weight. Usually these dietary guidelines are used by human beings. However, most veterinarians and dog owners agree that a similar dietary guideline should be followed by the pets.

In order for its life span to be long and healthy, dogs, like people, need to have the right combination of basice food groups. Dogs need to be regulated as to how much they eat or they, too, will end up becoming obese.

Dogs should also have a proper proportion of vitamins and minerals in their diet. This is important to their overall health as well as maintaing a shiny coat of fur.

Here are some tips to know how to fix the right foods for your dog:

1. Meat should not be an only mainstay in your dog’s diet.

Dogs are carnivorous, that is, meat-eating. The dog’s body is designed to produce energy and to generate growth from meat and meat products. However, fiber is also needed in the dog’s diet to enable them to digest foods in a proper manner. Carbohydrates provide extra energy that may be needed. It would be advantageous to the dog if the owner would feed it daily with the foods that are available in stores. Occasionally, he or she may give his or her pet real foods that have the proper amount of meat, carbohydrates and fiber present.

2. Vitamins and Minerals

Dogs need the proper amount and combination of vitamins and minerals not only to give their coats a healthy shine and luster but also to maitain healthy teeth and gums. Lack of vitamins and minerals can lead to many health problems such as dry or oily skin, low-weight, stomach problems, etc.. These dietary supplements are needed by dogs to keep them healthy just like humans.

3. Real meal treats

Dogs love real or “people” food more than most of the typical dog foods available. Therefore, whenever the dog gets real food, the dog considers it as a real treat!

4. Mixed foods

Many people often think that is is best to decide either to give the dog moist or dry food. As a matter of fact, this is not true. The best diet that an owner can give its pet is a mixture of the two foods. This not only provides a variety but additional nutritional value and texture as well.

5. Dogs need greens.

Green leafy vegetables are also needed in your dog’s diet. That is why you may see your dog chew on grass from time to time. This means that in order for your dog to have a well balanced diet, it needs a certain amount of green leafy vegetables.

There are no rules set in stone when it comes to giving your dog a balanced diet. Junk foods should be avoided. The best thing to do is to use common sense and then, if you have questions, consult your veterinarian.
